Kununurra

This morning I ran over the WA boarder. The scenery just gets better and better. I had no idea the landscape was going to be this dramatic and full of so many grandious changes. Amazing termite mounds have given way to the rocky backdrops, and we're not even in the Kimberly yet. The running is going really well still. Cranking out morning and evening runs have become  not so much second nature but a welcome break from the crazy hectic reality of living on a converted bus with 2 infants and 3 support crew. The heat of the day is one factor to contend with. Yesterday we parked up where I finished running to find ourselves "nowhere" and I mean that in a very lost, dusty, hot, no shade kind of way. Even with the shade sail up off the side of the bus there was just no getting away from the intence baking heat.... and the locals call this winter! For the first time I can think of on this trip the bus was actually cooler inside. We had all the fruit and vegetables to cook up and cut up and freeze up before we crossed the WA boarder. We were fast running out of water since Katherine, and Kununurra was still a night and a mornings run away. Anyway, the trustworthy team had got it all under control, I slept off my morning efforts and I got back out on the road for my evening run and waved to the happy caravaners.

Katherine

zrsblackbullcampOur time in Katherine has been a treat. We have to say a big thank you to the following businesses: Sylvias' Curry Take Away for a delicious evening meal for the whole crew; NBD Auto Electrics and THE DIDJ SHOP INTERNET CAFE who have let us use the internet connection here to update our journal entries, something we have not been able to do since crossing the top end on the Savannah Way due to the remoteness.

Hells Gate

reshoedirt

On from here the road isn't officially open to traffic yet this year so it was up to us to take the risk with 4WD only or pushbike support. The vehicles and team decided to drive the long way round stopping in at Mt. Isa for supplies, uber expensive diesel ($1.59/Lt) and to drop off Lindsay so he could be back with his ailing mum (aged 99) in Brisbane.

Normanton

rsafterarunblackbullThe long straight road from Croydon had been 155km, there was a welcome intersection, a sign of life and a lovely shower at the Sports Hall. Normanton school kids were at their sports day. The indiginous girls U/12's were crackingout 200m heats in bare feet on dry unmown grass in hot conditions at 32secs and go.

Darwin

One Third of the way around already! I can hardly believe it. Reaching Darwin was a big milestone for our run around our big backyard. I'm up to my 5th pair of MIZUNO running shoes, I've covered 5204km in 73 days. I've had ONE blister and have nearly grown back the toenail I wore off in my first few days running UPHILL out of Sydney (it felt uphill since running off the Harbour Bridge at least until we reached Port Macquarie!)

Daly Waters

pub

4604 km later and still on track for Darwin for next week. Daly Waters was such a great place, an oasis really. After spending so much time on dirt roads since Burketown and hardly seeing a soul, it was amazing to see so many tourists and happy caravaners congregated at such a happening place. The pub had heaps of character, the handful of townsfolk were chatty and keen to help out the cause of One Lap No Excuses, letting me talk at the dinner time where an audience for Franks singalong entertainment is already gathered. Many of the caravaners had passed me at some stage out on the road so were interested to hear the story behind this epic undertaking. The Daly Waters Publican Lindsay and Robyn gave a generous and much appreciated cash donation.

Leichhardt Falls

fallsLizzie and I completed a 36km morning run to make it to Leichhardt Falls this morning. It was a great place to end the run and freshen up. The crew enjoyed the peace and quiet and natural surroundings, artistic photo opportunites and a place to relax and unwind.

Croydon

1rscroydonWe had a fantastic stay at Croydon, there must be the friendliest staff at the beautifully laid out information centre. I enjoyed the 17 minute video on the towns History and was totally impressed with the whole look of the town. No wonder it has innumerable Tidy Town accalades to its' name.  The Children at Croydon State School were neatly presented and sat and listened with interest to my tales from the road.  We were welcome to stay at the peaceful caravan park and use the facilities there, including a salt water pool and free washing machines.
